General Dentist- Hampden County Jail

General Description:
Provides and oversees direct dental diagnosis, treatment, procedures, and care for the patient population at both the Hampden County Jail and House of Correction (Ludlow, MA) and Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center (Chicopee, MA).

Chief Dental Officer Supervises:
Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, Dental Students, and Externs.
Salary/Status:
ExemptMinimum Requirements:
Doctorate degree in Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine; at least one year of directly related experience is preferred, which may include completion of an accredited general practice residency program.
Experienced with or having a strong interest in addressing the health care needs of a population under incarceration.
Sensitive to and respectful of cultural differences and care requirements of the patient population.
Able to work with a multidisciplinary team and within a restrictive and security-controlled environment.
Principle Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide and manage direct patient care, including examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, and treatment for a specific patient population.
Prescribe pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
Refer patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
Direct and coordinate the patient care activities of dental technical and support staff as required.
Follow established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
Follow security and safety protocols as established by the Sheriff's Department.
As appropriate to the position, participates in specified health promotion, education, and/or prevention programs.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in the area of expertise.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of dental care.
Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage Working Conditions:
This position may require the ability to work long hours.
Moderate physical activity.
May require prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.
Requires handling of an average-weight object up to 25 pounds.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials, chemicals and bloodborne/airborne pathogens that require following extensive safety precautions and include the use of protective equipment.
This position requires the ability to use a computer workstation and dental software.
This position requires the ability to work in a restrictive environment.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
