The UMass Center at Springfield will offer bachelor and graduate level courses associated with a variety of existing academic degrees and certificates; and training programs to the citizens of Greater Springfield at nearby locations and/or online. In addition, the Center will house selected outreach, research, and economic development programs and activities. The Center will work with UMass campuses, Holyoke Community College, and Springfield Technical Community College to offer for-credit courses and workforce training programs from those institutions at the Center and/or provide courses that blend on-site with online learning. The goal is to provide existing academic degrees, certificates, and training that are responsive to the educational, economic and social needs of Greater Springfield area residents.
The Director of Operations for the UMass Center in Springfield is responsible for the overall operations of this Western Mass. urban satellite center. The Director of Operations- duties shall include but not be limited to: management of the Center-s day-to-day operations; facility oversight; the supervision of six to ten professional staff; preparation and oversight of the center-s budget; outreach to the Greater Springfield community-s public and private sector leaders; guiding the strategic planning process to further the Center-s classes and programs and promote enrollment growth in a manner consistent with UMass- land grant mission; collaboration with UMass- administrators and faculty and regional community college leaders to further the academic programming at the Center; and, the evaluation of current and proposed systems and procedures to determine and implement changes as necessary to advance the goals of the center.
Job Description:
Efficiently manage and oversee the daily operations and functions essential to the operation of the UMass Center at Springfield. Work with appropriate university departments to develop, implement and maintain operational procedures including but not limited to IT back-up and cyber security; protocol for exceptional circumstances including inclement weather and emergency response; and all other operational procedures and protocol required to successfully run the center.
Work closely with the management of Tower Square to ensure consistency of operations between the center and host building.
Supervise the administrative and support personnel of the Center and all necessary human resource functions including: general supervision and problem solving; project staffing; ongoing staff support and professional development; the carrying-out of the University-s administration of human resource policies and procedures; completion of all associated personnel actions; updating job descriptions; and personnel evaluations.
Develop and oversee the Center-s budget including forecasting revenues and expenses based upon projected enrollments and costs; analysis of projected versus actual revenues and expenditures; and, the efficient allocation of resources among production, programming, equipment, maintenance and other support functions.
Advance the intersection of the mission of the University and the needs of Greater Springfield by working with university leadership, faculty and staff, and with regional private, public and civic organizations to identify and implement opportunities for teaching, research, and engagement in the third largest urban core in the Commonwealth.
Working with the Associate Vice-President for Economic Development and the UMass Amherst Vice Chancellor for University Relations to develop and implement a strategic plan to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Center-s programs and activities including short-term and long-range goals for the Satellite Center to successfully identify and secure funding and accomplish University goals and objectives.
With an emphasis on entrepreneurialism, work with deans and faculty across all UMass Campuses and the regional community colleges to identify required facilities and enrollment goals for academic programmatic efforts. Collaborate closely with UMass Campuses and the regional community colleges to develop, implement and evaluate collaborative academic opportunities among those campuses and the center.
Conduct periodic program evaluation to ensure the Center protects and advances the UMass brand which emphasizes excellence, educational accessibility, service, and research and engagement.
Communicate routinely with the Associate Vice-President for Economic Development and the UMass Amherst Vice Chancellor for University Relations regarding the Center-s programs and progress in meeting its goals.
Disseminate information from the University to Center staff and oversee implementation and compliance with University policies.
Serve on University committees.
Qualifications:
Required
Minimum of Master-s degree in Management or related field
At least five (5) years- experience of demonstrated management, supervisory, and administrative skills.
Experience working with senior level leadership and an ability to exercise good judgment, strong leadership and effective communication when discussing the University and the role of the Center to external constituencies.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proven record of managing a wide range of complex projects from inception to successful completion.
Preferred
At least five (5) years- experience working with leaders from the public, private and civic sectors.
At least five (5) years- experience in a public higher education setting with an understanding of the role that research universities play in a regional economy.
A demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of the Pioneer Valley region and its economic and political landscape.
Experience in event management.
Excellent negotiation skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with multiple constituencies, both internal and external to an organization.
